Steve WheelerBrief Biography: Steve Wheeler is a Learning Innovation Consultant and former Associate Professor of Learning Technologies at the Plymouth Institute of Education where he chaired the Learning Futures group and led the Computing and Science education teams. Since 2019 he has held to position of tutor on the Masters in Education programme at Plymouth Marjon University. He continues to research into technology supported learning and distance education, with particular emphasis on the pedagogy underlying the use of social media and Web 2.0 technologies, and also has research interests in mobile learning and cybercultures. He has given keynotes to audiences in more than 35 countries and is author of over 150 scholarly articles, with almost 8000 academic citations. An active and prolific edublogger, his blog Learning with ‘e’s is a regular online commentary on the social and cultural impact of disruptive technologies, and the application of digital media in education, learning and development. In the last few years it has attracted in excess of 8.5 million unique visitors.

Full biography: Steve Wheeler is a Learning Innovations Consultant and former Associate Professor of Learning Technologies at Plymouth University, in South West England. Steve’s entire career has been in media, technology and learning, predominantly in nurse education (NHS 1981-1995) and teacher education (1976-1981 and 1995-2017). Between 1998-2017 he was in the Plymouth Institute of Education, at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities where he chaired the Digital Learning Futures group and led both the Computing and Science education teams.

Steve is a global educator, teaching and presenting online, and has taught on a number of undergraduate and post-graduate teacher education programmes in the UK and overseas. Since 2019 he has held to position of tutor on the Masters in Education programme at Plymouth Marjon University. He researches into technology supported learning and distance education, with particular emphasis on the pedagogy underlying the use of social media and Web 2.0 technologies, and he also has research interests in mobile learning and cybercultures. Steve is regularly invited to speak about his work and has given keynotes and invited lectures to audiences in more than 35 countries across 5 continents. He is currently involved in several research programmes related to technology supported learning, digital praxis, and learning through the use of social media and handheld technologies.

Steve is the author of more than 150 scholarly articles, with almost 8000 academic citations and is an active and prolific edublogger. His blog Learning with ‘e’s is a regular online commentary on the social and cultural impact of disruptive technologies, and the application of digital media in education, learning and development. In the last few years it has attracted in excess of 8.5 million unique visitors.

Between 2003-2013 SSteve in Dohateve was chair of the Plymouth e-Learning Conference, and between 2008-2011 was also co-editor of the journal Interactive Learning Environments. He serves on the editorial boards of more than a dozen learning technology, medical and education related open access academic journals including Research in Learning Technology (formerly ALT-J), the International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning (IRRODL), the European Journal of Open, Distance and eLearning (EURODL) and Digital Culture and Education. He has served on the organising and executive committees of a number of high profile international academic conferences, including ALT-C, ICL, EDEN, IFIP and AICT.

In 2008 Steve was awarded a Fellowship by the European Distance and E-learning Network (EDEN), in 2011 he served as a member of the Steering group of EDEN’s Network of Academics and Professionals (NAP), and between 2014-2017 was elected chair. Between 2008-2013 he also served as chair of the influential worldwide research group IFIP Technical Committee Working Group 3.6 (distance education), and in 2015 he was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. In 2017 Steve was appointed Senior Fellow of EDEN in recognition of his leadership and research in European education. He is the author of several books including The Digital Classroom (Routledge: 2008) and Connected Minds, Emerging Cultures (Information Age: 2009). His book based on the blog Learning with ‘e’s was published by Crown House in February 2015. His latest book Digital Learning in Organisations was published by Kogan Page in April 2019. He lives with his family in Plymouth, on the South West coast of England.
